Privacy Policy

1. Introduction

Ryval ("we", "us", "Ryval", "the App") provides a social challenge tracking application that lets you create challenges, track your progress, and connect with friends. This Privacy Policy explains what information we collect, how we use it, and the choices you have about your data.

2. Information We Collect

Account information

When you sign up, we collect:

  • Email address (required, for sign-in and account recovery)
  • Password (stored securely as a hash; we never see your raw password)
  • Optional: full name, username, profile photo, short bio

Content you create

When you use Ryval, we store:

  • Challenges you create (title, description, goal, dates, settings)
  • Activity entries you log (amount, date)
  • Proof photos you upload, with optional descriptions
  • Friend connections (when you send or accept a friend request)

Photos

You may upload:

  • A profile avatar
  • Proof photos for challenges that require evidence of activity

Before any photo leaves your device, Ryval re-encodes it to remove embedded metadata such as GPS location, device serial numbers, and capture timestamps. We do not collect or store this metadata.

Push notification tokens

If you grant notification permission, we store an anonymous push token issued by Expo (our notification provider) along with your platform (iOS or Android). This token is used solely to deliver app notifications to your device.

Device permissions

Ryval requests:

  • Camera — only when you choose to take a proof photo or set an avatar
  • Photo Library — only when you choose to select a photo from your library
  • Notifications — to send you reminders, friend request alerts, and challenge updates

We do not request location, contacts, microphone, health data, or any other device permission.

What we do not collect

We do not collect:

  • Your location (precise or coarse)
  • Your contacts or address book
  • Crash reports, analytics, or usage data
  • Any data for advertising or tracking

3. How We Use Your Information

We use the information we collect to:

  • Authenticate you and keep your account secure
  • Display your profile, challenges, and activity to you and to people you've connected with
  • Show challenge leaderboards to participants in those challenges
  • Deliver push notifications you've subscribed to
  • Allow other users to find and connect with you by username or email (subject to your privacy settings)
  • Comply with our legal obligations

We do not sell your personal information. We do not use your data to serve advertising. We do not share your data with third parties for marketing.

4. Who Sees Your Information

Other users

  • Your username, full name, and avatar may be visible to friends and to participants in challenges you join
  • Proof photos you upload to a challenge may be visible to other participants and to the challenge creator
  • Your privacy settings (in Profile → Edit Profile) control who can send you friend requests, see your activity, or invite you to challenges

Service providers

We share data only with the providers we need to operate the App:

  • Supabase — our database, authentication, and file storage provider. All account, challenge, photo, and notification data is stored in Supabase. See Supabase's privacy practices.
  • Expo — our push notification delivery provider. Expo handles routing notifications from our servers to your device. See Expo's privacy policy.

We do not share your data with any other third parties.

Legal requests

We may disclose information if required by law, valid legal process, or to protect the rights, property, or safety of Ryval, our users, or the public.

5. Your Choices

Privacy settings

In Profile → Edit Profile, you can control:

  • Whether other users can send you friend requests
  • Whether your activity is visible to friends
  • Whether other users can invite you to challenges

Notifications

You can disable push notifications at any time from your device's system settings, or from Profile → Notification Settings inside the App.

Updating your account

You can update your name, username, avatar, and bio at any time from the Profile screen.

Deleting your account

You can permanently delete your Ryval account from Profile → Delete Account. When you confirm deletion, we immediately and permanently remove:

  • Your authentication record (you can no longer sign in)
  • Your profile, name, and bio
  • Your avatar and all proof photos
  • Challenges you created
  • Your activity history
  • Your friend connections
  • Your push notification tokens

This action cannot be undone. Account deletion typically completes within seconds.

6. Data Retention

We retain your information for as long as your account is active. When you delete your account, we delete your data immediately as described above. Backups maintained by our service providers may retain copies for up to 30 days before being purged on a rolling basis.

7. Security

We protect your data with:

  • Encryption in transit (TLS) for all communication between the App and our servers
  • Encryption at rest for files stored in Supabase Storage
  • Hashed passwords (we never store plaintext passwords)
  • Row-level security policies in our database that restrict each user to their own data and the data they're entitled to see

No system is perfectly secure. If we ever experience a security incident affecting your personal data, we will notify you in accordance with applicable law.

8. Children

Ryval is not intended for children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child under 13 has provided us with personal information, please contact us at support@ryval.net and we will delete it.

9. International Users

Ryval is operated from the United States. By using the App, you consent to the transfer and processing of your information in the United States and any country where our service providers operate.

10. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we do, we will update the "Effective date" at the top of this page and, if the changes are significant, notify you within the App or by email.
